Fostering diversity in the Canadian broadcasting system through the participation of micro-online broadcasters| Promouvoir la diversité dans le système canadien de radiodiffusion grâce à la participation des microdiffuseurs en ligne (2025-2027)

My current SSHRC-supported postdoctoral research considers how recent changes to the Broadcasting Act may impact micro-online broadcasters, which are typically small, non-profit or charitable organizations with an artistic and/or community mandate. the new Broadcasting Act captures a broad spectrum of online audiovisual distribution outlets, which have traditionally operated outside of the mainstream broadcasting system (e.g., independent film festivals, non-profit distributors, artist-driven streaming platforms). This includes hundreds of “micro-online broadcasters” who engage in a range of activities which are now considered to be online broadcasting under the Act. I posit that micro-online broadcasters are already engaged in audiovisual distribution activities aligned with the Canadian broadcasting system’s newly expanded cultural diversity objectives.

Mobilizing the Canadian community-driven audiovisual archives policy network | Mobilisation du réseau canadien des politiques en matière d’archives audiovisuelles communautaires (2026-2027)

I am PI for this Knowledge Mobilization project supported by a SSHRC Connection grant that activates a cross-Canada network of media and communication studies academics, archivists, media artists, and cultural workers. In partnership with the National Indigenous Media Arts Coalition, Winnipeg Film Group, The ArQuives: Canada’s LGBTQ2+ Arquives, Independent Media Arts Alliance, Critical Digital Methods Institute, and Concordia University Press we aim to develop six digital open-access policy resources, organize public panels to activate and publicize the resources; and host the resources in open access digital repositories. This project responds to identified needs to build capacity across the community-based audiovisual archives sector in the areas of organizational policy, sectoral policy, and network self-governance.
